Alaska Railroad Corporation Chooses Actelis Networks MetaLIGHT Platform To Provide Broadband Services Between Corporate Facilities

With an abundance of copper pairs embedded throughout their business enterprise, Alaska Railroad selects Actelis Networks MetaLIGHT platforms to provide high-bandwidth Ethernet service between corporate buildings utilizing their existing copper infrastructure

FREMONT, Calif., May 18, 2004 - Actelis Networks®, a leading supplier
of solutions that enable carrier-grade broadband services over local-loop copper,
today announced that Alaska Railroad Corporation has deployed its MetaLIGHT®
Ethernet-over-Copper platform. This deployment allows the Alaska Railroad to
provide high-bandwidth Ethernet services between corporate buildings connected
only by copper. The Alaska Railroad is currently using the MetaLIGHT platform
to deliver 65 Mbps of Ethernet service between multiple corporate buildings.
The Alaska Railroad Corporation is a self-sustaining, full-service railroad
serving ports and communities from the Gulf of Alaska to Fairbanks. Within their
headquarters facility in Anchorage, Alaska, they have multiple buildings that
require a seamless communications infrastructure. Prior to deploying Actelis'
MetaLIGHT platform, they connected all their facilities using mixture of fiber,
wireless and T1 solutions. Although the mixture of these broadband technologies
is suitable for many of their networked buildings, they also needed a solution
which could bridge the gap between T1 and fiber, providing more bandwidth with
higher reliability and a better quality of service than wireless solutions can
deliver.
With Actelis' MetaLIGHT platforms, the Alaska Railroad is now delivering a
high quality 65 Mbps Ethernet service between multiple buildings that are only
connected by copper. The MetaLIGHT solution has allowed them to extend LAN connectivity
to copper-serviced buildings, while reducing IT costs by simplifying administration
and eliminating costly, separate LAN servers.
"The Actelis MetaLIGHT platform is ideal for business environments that own
their own copper infrastructure and need to provide high-speed, high-quality
broadband services to multiple buildings," said David Kampsen, network systems
specialist, Alaska Railroad Corporation. "Actelis' MetaLIGHT platform allowed
us to economically eliminate all barriers associated with delivering high-bandwidth
broadband services throughout our facility."
"Since the MetaLIGHT platform could utilize Alaska Railroad's existing copper
plant to deliver high-bandwidth Ethernet services, they already had everything
they needed to begin delivering services simply and cost-effectively," said
Bruce Hammergren, vice president of North America sales, Actelis Networks. "Because
it has been designed for easy deployment, the MetaLIGHT platform allowed them
to deliver high-bandwidth services to multiple buildings quickly and without
any large infrastructure investments."
Utilizing standards-based G.SHDSL.bis modems and designed to comply with the
emerging copper bonding standards, Actelis' MetaLIGHT platforms can provide
up to 67 Mbps of Ethernet services to customers and/or locations only served
by copper. Additionally, the MetaLIGHT platforms are powered by Actelis' patented
MetaLOOP® technology which provides far greater rate, reach and reliability,
compared to other broadband over copper solution. The bandwidth capabilities
and high reliability of the MetaLIGHT platforms make them ideal to support a
wide range of broadband applications including transparent LAN services, LAN
interconnection, voice and video over IP. They are also well suited to backhaul
bandwidth to DSLAMs/NGDLCs, WiFi and cellular base stations.
