Cost-Effective, High Quality Broadband For UK Schools

Actelis MetaLIGHT platform, from Microtel, chosen to provide fiber-quality broadband over existing copper infrastructure to more than 650 schools in the UK

London, UK, Fremont, CA, September 19, 2005 - Microtel, Actelis' Networks distributor in the UK, has been contracted to supply, install and commission Actelis Networks'® MetaLIGHT® Ethernet-over-Copper platform to deliver high-speed broadband services to over 650 schools in the United Kingdom. Actelis is a worldwide leader in delivering broadband over copper solutions that enable profitable, carrier-grade, broadband services over the local loop.

Standards-based Actelis MetaLIGHT platforms will deliver fiber-quality broadband connectivity to the schools through unbundled local loops, providing links to connect between the schools and educational information sources as well as the Internet through a national broadband network.

Using the existing copper infrastructure, the new high-quality bandwidth service will allow the schools to receive cost-effective, scalable, high-speed broadband connections. Students and teachers alike will have access to the very real advantages of online educational tools and high-speed information throughout each site.

John Larkin, Microtel sales and marketing director, added "Microtel is delighted to have been chosen to deliver broadband connectivity to schools, using the award-winning Actelis MetaLIGHT product. The product was chosen following exhaustive evaluation of several different platforms. This solution enables system integrators, service providers, and private network operators to use the existing copper infrastructure to provide premium long-reach voice, video and data services quickly and universally."

"By providing this platform for delivery of broadband services to schools, using our MetaLIGHT product, we have created the first of what we hope to be many initiatives to deliver fiber-quality broadband to the UK education sector", said Ronen Peleg, Actelis Networks' vice president of sales for EMEA. "Actelis is pleased to be providing the universal, high-speed broadband access that students, teachers and local authorities are increasingly, and rightly, demanding. We look forward to a continued and increasing relationship with Microtel."

Actelis' award-winning product portfolio enables system integrators, service providers, and private network operators to use the existing copper infrastructure to provide premium long-reach voice, video and data services quickly and universally. Available in point-to-point or point-to-multipoint configurations, Actelis' Ethernet in the First Mile MetaLIGHT platforms deliver up to 70 Mbps of high-quality traffic to customers or locations over the existing copper plant.

Based on IEEE (802.3ah), ITU-T (G.998) and ETSI standards, and powered by Actelis' patented MetaLOOP® technology, Actelis platforms provide far better rate, reach and reliability than other Ethernet-over-Copper solutions. With the ability to provide high-quality bandwidth to distances beyond 6km, Actelis' platforms are ideal to support a wide range of broadband applications including backhauling of 3G/UTMS base stations, WiFi and DSLAMs. They are also well suited to transparent LAN services, LAN interconnection, and voice and video over IP.
